CANDIDATE BIOGRAPHIES - 2022

Jared Eickhoff – In 2016, I graduated from the College of St. Scholastica DPT program. Shortly after, I moved to Sartell, MN, and started working at a private physician-owned clinic, working with chiropractors, physicians, as well as other medical professions. During that time, I started working at a PRN home health care company. After about one year, I decided to move closer to home taking a PT position at a rural hospital. With that came working in various PT settings all in one day, ranging from SNF to OP ortho as well as acute care/inpatient rehabilitation. During that two-year bout, I started my own private business focusing on end phases of rehab for athletes/patients at the tail end of rehabilitation as well a contracting our primary S&C services for athletes at the local high school.

Once I moved to Duluth, MN, I started to get more involved in teaching DPT students as shown by my adjunct history at CSS. During that time, I also started getting involved with free, online mentorship to new graduate PT/OT/AT/DC providers. This experience allowed me to see the reality of the PT education system as well as the PT profession as a whole. Then, since moving to Fargo, I have gotten the opportunity to get involved in various aspects of the rehabilitation processions as a whole. With a lot of these various PT setting experiences, as well as differing levels of involvement in the PT educational system as a whole, I feel that I can provide a unique perspective to the ND APTA.

Amber Richards – Amber Richards is currently the PTA Delegate for the NDAPTA and has been on this wonderful journey the last two years. She has been in the physical therapy field since 2018 and has experience in various settings including outpatient orthopedics, skilled nursing, and home health. Amber has worked tirelessly to improve communication between her PTA Caucus and NDAPTA as well as increase membership in her state. She also regularly attends monthly PTA meetings in order to stay up-to-date on current issues affecting our profession. Amber has been an excellent role model for other PTAs and will continue to be a valuable asset to both her PTA Caucus and NDAPTA

Kristen Schulz – I am excited to be on the ballot for Member-at-Large < 30.000! My husband, Steve, and I recently made the move back to our hometown of Edgeley, ND, with our daughter, Jordyn. We love being back on the farm spending time outside, playing cards, and with our families.

I attended University of Mary for graduate school and have spent the last 8 years in Hillsboro, ND, as a physical therapist. During that time, my passion for serving rural communities grew. I have served a variety of patients from kids, adults, athletes, and more! I love having the ability to see patients receive quality care without having to drive to a large city. My focus is on growing my skills to serve our community needs. My current additional trainings are for orthopedic injuries, dizziness/vestibular concerns, pediatrics, and falls/balance prevention. I am currently working in LaMoure, ND—it has been great to be back home!

Deena Caillier – Deena Caillier is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Jamestown as well as a PRN outpatient Physical Therapist at Essentia Health in Fargo, North Dakota. Born and raised in Valley City, ND, Deena pursued her schooling and career at UND obtaining her Doctor of Physical Therapy in 2012. She then moved to Colorado to explore the mountains as well as work in an outpatient orthopedic clinic. After missing the cold, frigid weather as well as the home-grown roots, she moved back in 2016. Throughout her career, she has obtained numerous certifications to help her grow as a lifelong learner and to help her patients the best she can. Currently, she is seeking a role in APTA ND to further help others and the profession.

Deena Caillier is interested in the Nominating Committee for APTA ND. With my growing career, I have valued being organized, accountable, and overall committed to the profession. This opportunity will not only help me be more connected and be more involved with APTA ND, but also to have an example to current students on why being involved is important.

APTA Launches New Public Service Announcement To Encourage Americans To Get Moving

APTA recently launched its new ChoosePT public service announcement, and you can help us get the word out. The PSA delivers a clear message: Regular physical activity is one of the best things you can do for your health. Physical therapists and physical therapist assistants can help you safely get moving.

The message comes at an appropriate time, as most Americans don't move enough despite proven benefits, and COVID-19 hasn't helped. During stressful times like these, it is even more critical to get the recommended amount of daily physical activity for your age and ability.

#ChoosePT

Message from the North Dakota Physical Therapy Board

Telehealth is allowed by the ND state practice act as the definition of telehealth includes the practice of PT.

16. " Telehealth" is the use of electronic communications to provide and deliver health-related information and health care services, including physical therapy related information and services, over any distance. Telehealth encompasses health care and health promotion activities, including education, advice, reminders, interventions, and the monitoring of interventions.

The rules and regulations for the practice of PT apply equally regardless if a patient is seen in person or via telehealth. Reimbursement is an issue out of our control. This will need to be negotiated directly with the insurance carriers.

2020 Newsletter

What is APTA doing for you right now?

Click here for more information about our newsletter.

The Lymphedema Coverage Act was included and passed in the house and will be considered by the senate as part of the passage of H.R. 3.

APTA and other providers are working on the 8% Medicare cut by trying to get leads for a congressional sign on letter to CMS.

H.R. 5453, Locum tenens legislation was introduced by Rep Lujan (D-NM) and Rep. Bilirakis (R-FL) which would allow PTs to bring in another licensed PT to treat Medicare patients in the event of an absence. This bill would expand the practice to the entire nation.

A template has been designed for patients to send letters to their members of Congress on the 8% Medicare cut. This can be accessed on choosept.com in the Patient Action Center.

Because of the collective efforts of APTA members and staff, CMS took notice of the issue of using a modifier for PTA/OTA services. While it hung on to the policy that the modifier must be applied when 10% or more of the service is delivered by a PTA or OTA, the agency’s final rule for 2020 backed away from many of the more problematic elements of its proposed plan.

2019 APTA House of Delegates Summary

The 2019 APTA House of Delegates (HOD), attended by Heather England (chief delegate), Mary Dockter (delegate), Holly Schilling (PTA Caucus rep), and Cindy Flom-Meland (ND Chapter President), was once again a jam-packed, productive, and informative few days. The HOD was held in Chicago June 9-12 just prior to the NEXT conference. During this time, the 402 member delegation addressed 70 motions (many were placed on a consent calendar and thus had minimal discussion during session) as well as elected new members to the APTA Board of Directors. The House members continue to experience an increased workload as a Special Committee, appointed by the House, works through a review of past APTA and House Documents to ensure up to date language and continued utility. All motions are then presented to the HOD to either be amended with new language or rescinded if no longer needed.

APTA Board of Directors Election Results:

Secretary: Kip Schick, PT, DPT, MBA

Educational Research in ND

Physical Therapy educational research is alive and well in North Dakota! Currently, all three DPT programs simultaneously have a publication with the Journal of Physical Therapy Education.

At the University of Jamestown, Dr. Mitch Wolden and Dr. Brittany Anderson published a case report titled, “Enhancing pediatric education for physical therapy students through the development of community partnerships to facilitate experiential learning: A case report.”

At the University of North Dakota, Dr. Renee Mabey, Dr. Peggy Mohr, and Dr. Thomas Mohr published a research report titled, “Physical therapist student use of social media and perceptions of professional behaviors regarding social media postings.”

At the University of Mary, Dr. Mary Dockter, Dr. Heather Lundeen, and Dr. Michael Parker published a method/model presentation titled, “An interprofessional geriatric experiential learning experience: Its impact on physical and occupational therapist students.”

New APTA Chapter Brand!

Our chapter is embracing APTA’s strategic plan objective to embody the APTA mission and vision through an integrated brand strategy!

By unifying our association branding, we will create clarity for our members and potential members. It will be easier to recognize APTA’s collective offerings and value. The unified brand will help us provide a more consistent member experience, strengthening our community in the spirit of APTA’s mission.
Rebranding is about much more than a new look or logo. Our brand will encourage us to act for impact, better leveraging our state-level expertise on behalf of members and potential members. The profession is evolving and so are we. Our new brand represents an investment in the future to maximize our impact. We’re sending a message that symbolizes our unity and ability to work together for the benefit of the profession and the public it serves. By creating a more unified brand, we strengthen our voice and our ability to represent and advocate for our members, the physical therapy profession, and the people we serve.

What to look for in the future:

APTA national is launching a new brand in the summer of 2020 with the launch of a new APTA.org. Look for our chapter’s new name, logo, and visual look now here on our website and on social media.

Other chapters and sections also can adopt the new brand and may reveal their new look before or after APTA does so. APTA hopes to align as many components as possible before the end of the association’s centennial year of 2021, but participation in the unified brand is voluntary.
